Mariamou Sims, MD
Dr. Mariamou Sims is a board-certified Internal Medicine physician who has been delivering compassionate, high-quality care to patients since 2007. She joins Thrive Internal Medicine with nearly two decades of experience at NorthShore University HealthSystem (now Endeavor Health), where she has built a reputation for her warmth, clinical expertise, and deep commitment to patient well-being.
Born in Mali, West Africa, and growing up in Denver, Colorado, Dr. Sims spent her early childhood immersed in a vibrant culture that instilled in her a strong sense of family, resilience, and community service, which all deeply influenced her decision to pursue a career in Medicine. Dr. Sims graduated from Northwestern University with a Bachelor of Arts in French Studies and completed her pre-medical coursework at Loyola University. She earned her medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago and went on to complete her residency training in Internal Medicine at the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University (Evanston Hospital Campus), where she also served as Chief Resident.
Throughout her medical career, Dr. Sims has held several leadership and teaching roles. She has served as a Clinical Instructor in the Outpatient Department at NorthShore University Health Systems and has continued to teach residents and nurse practitioners in her current clinical practice. She was actively involved in numerous Quality Assurance Committees during her training. Her dedication to education and quality improvement was recognized early in her career through awards such as the NIH Minority International Research Training Program Scholarship and the Illinois General Assembly Public Service Scholarship.
In her new role at Thrive Internal Medicine, Dr. Sims is excited to continue building deep, trusting relationships with her patients. She believes strongly in the model of whole-patient care that Thrive embodies—one that blends evidence-based medicine with the time and compassion needed to understand each individual’s unique needs. Her approach centers on listening carefully, empowering patients with knowledge, and partnering with them on their health journey.
Fluent in French (and Bambara), and passionate about lifelong learning, Dr. Sims brings not only exceptional clinical skills but also cultural sensitivity and warmth to her practice. Her patients consistently describe her as attentive, thorough, and deeply committed to their care.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Sims enjoys life with her husband, their three children—including a set of twins—and two dogs. She is an enthusiastic supporter of her children’s sports teams, enjoys exercising, playing brain games on her phone, and practicing her French. As one of five siblings herself, family remains a central pillar in her life and a source of daily inspiration.
